Trump intensifies brutal persecution against immigrants
In a xenophobic move, harsher policies against immigrants are a direct attack on human rights
The new anti-immigration offensive by Donald Trump’s government exposes the deepening of institutionalized xenophobia in the United States.
With measures reminiscent of the most authoritarian regimes in history, Trump announced a 90-day freeze on funding for organizations that support immigrants, such as the IOM (International Organization for Migration), and launched a racist and violent crackdown. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents raid schools and hospitals, while a network of informants – encouraged by the “zero tolerance” rhetoric – reports so-called "illegal" immigrants on social media and through the official channels of the police agency. This is a policy of state terror.
The criminalization of immigration gains momentum with increased detentions, even of those accused of minor crimes, accelerated deportations, and the revocation of protection programs that prevent deportation, exposing thousands of immigrants to uncertainty and despair. In a speech given on January 19, Trump announced that he will instruct the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon to prepare the American prison at Guantanamo Bay, in Cuba, to receive up to 30,000 illegal immigrants.
In this way, Trump fuels the ultraconservative agenda and strengthens American imperialism through a narrative of "foreign threat."
It is crucial to always defend and remember that migration is not a crime! And that this right to migrate is guaranteed in various international human rights treaties.
The fight cannot stop. More than that, our struggle knows no borders or walls! We must confront policies of terror and strengthen our solidarity with organizations that continue to resist in the U.S. and around the world. We call on unions, social movements, and all entities committed to social justice to denounce this barbarity and strengthen support networks for immigrant workers. No human being is illegal!
