Statement by the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company Condemning the confirmation of the Death Sentence for Pakhshan Azizi by the Supreme Court and Other Death Sentences

The Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company strongly condemns the unjust confirmation of the death sentence against Pakhshan Azizi, a social worker and women’s rights activist, by the Supreme Court. We also denounce the issuance and execution of other death sentences targeting civil, social, and political activists.

Pakhshan Azizi has been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court on the baseless charge of “rebellion” due to her peaceful and civic activities, including her assistance to displaced women and children in Syria and Iraq.

According to Amnesty International, between 2014 and 2022, Pakhshan Azizi was involved in humanitarian activities, providing aid to women and children displaced by armed attacks by ISIS. Many of these individuals were sheltered in camps in northeastern Syria and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The recent confirmation of Pakhshan Azizi’s unjust death sentence by the Supreme Court highlights the ongoing systematic repression and complete disregard for justice within the judicial system.

The trial of Pakhshan Azizi, marred by torture, enforced disappearance, coerced confessions, and widespread violations of due process, is a clear example of the expanding crackdown on civil activists and human rights defenders. These sentences are part of a repressive policy aimed at instilling fear and suppressing the freedom and pursuit of justice by oppressed people in the country.

The Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company demands the immediate halt of Pakhshan Azizi’s death sentence, her unconditional release, and the revocation of death sentences against Behrouz Ehsani, Mehdi Hassani, Verisheh Moradi, and other civil and political activists.

We also reaffirm our strong opposition to the death penalty as an inhumane punishment and a tool of oppression. Workers’ movements in Iran and worldwide unequivocally oppose the death penalty in all its forms and pretexts. We consider the death penalty a violation of the right to life, social justice, equality, and the right to a dignified life. Its abolition is a critical step toward building more humane and just societies.

We call on all workers, labour unions, human rights organizations, and international civil society to take a firm and effective stance against these unjust sentences and systemic repression.
