Strike at Poland's largest metal packaging manufacturer
The Network
The member organisations of the International Labour Network of Solidarity and Struggle are supporting the strike at Poland's largest metal packaging manufacturer.
Appeal by the Workers' Initative trade union (OZZ Inicjatywa Pracownicza)
Thursday june 20th, we started a strike at CanPack Food and Industrial Packaging, the biggest manufacturer of metal packaging in Poland. We ask you to support our strike fund.
Our union organized the first strike in the history of CANPACK FIP corporation in Poland. It is the result of a collective dispute with the company's management which we entered in March 2024. We demand a 14.4% increase of our salaries on average, with a special focus on the lowest-paid employees. Because of our hard work, the company doubled its net profit from 8M euro (37M pln) to 15.5M euro (67M pln) in the period of 2020-2023. The parent company CANPACK SA, to which part of CANPACK FIP's profits are transferred, recorded a net profit of 92M euro (400M pln) in 2023, 25M euro (100M pln) more than in 2022.
As of Saturday 22.06, almost entire crew at all shifts strikes at the Brzesko factory. On the first day, the strike also escalated to a second factory in Debica, where almost entire afternoon and night shifts stood down.
Currently, the main challenge to continue the strike is our poor financial situation. Nearly half of the workers here earn Polish minimum wage (circa 830 eur). Our union is supporting us financially, but even with that support, a week-long strike could mean that we won't be able to pay our bills. Therefore, to enable us to continue our struggle, we’re asking for your financial support.
For this purpose, we launched an online fundraising: https://zrzutka.pl/en/b5vmsf
