The struggle of the Argentine people is also our struggle!

The European member organisations of the International Trade Union Network of Solidarity and Struggle, meeting in Milan from 2-4 February 2024, salute the struggle of the Argentinean people and the determination of the trade union organisations that are organising the response to the reactionary government of Milei. The government is planning economic measures in response to the orders of the International Monetary Fund: these political decisions have tragic consequences for the people and the workers of this country.

In this context, the government also wants to restrict the democratic right to demonstrate. It does so in defiance of the country's constitution. The government's initial text treats public demonstrations as criminal offences. It authorises the security forces to repress all protests, to carry out intelligence activities on social organisations, to confiscate vehicles and to punish individuals and associations for exercising a fundamental right. It is, in fact, the declaration of a kind of state of siege without any of the conditions provided for in the national constitution. It should be recalled that the President, Vice-President and ministers of the new government have publicly denied the crimes of the military dictatorship that ravaged Argentina from 1976 to 1983 (assassinations, torture and mass arrests, suppression of public freedoms, etc.).

Milei's policy demonstrates the profound nature of the extreme right, a mortal danger for the world of work, for public services and for the environment, and a contempt for the most elementary democratic principles.

No more barbaric economic measures: the Argentinean people must not pay for the lavishness of the capitalist minority that destroys the planet.

Stop the freedom-destroying decisions of the Argentine government.

Stop denying the crimes of the military dictatorship!
