General strike on 3 June

The Red

The member organisations of the International Trade Union Network for Solidarity and Struggles support the call for a strike on 3 June, issued by Portuguese trade unions.

As in many other countries, the issue at stake is a new draft law aimed at abolishing or undermining a number of workers’ rights. Last year, strikes, demonstrations, rallies and other trade union actions forced the government to back down. It is now attempting to push through a new counter-reform bill:

Making it ever easier to make workers redundant.
Increasing job insecurity.
Longer working hours.
Undermining of maternity and paternity rights.
Attacks on collective bargaining, the right to strike and trade union freedoms.

All this, of course, without any measures to address wages, which keep a large part of the population in poverty and are far from keeping pace with rising prices, particularly for basic necessities.

The member organisations of the International Trade Union Network of Solidarity and Struggles reaffirm their desire to build an internationalist trade unionism, based on the immediate interests of our social class and with a view to radical social transformation, to break with capitalism, and to build a feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonialist society for social emancipation.

We wish the strike on 3 June every success!
