AZAT MIFTAKHOV, RUSSIAN MATHEMATICIAN AND DISSIDENT, IS BEING TORTURED IN PUTIN'S PRISONS

Since 2019, Azat Miftakhov has been incarcerated under a fabricated judicial process, recognized as a political trial by numerous international organizations. In recent days, the situation has dramatically worsened: Azat was forcibly transferred to the high-security prison of Kharp (IK-18).
Located in the Arctic Circle (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug), this prison is isolated in an inhospitable zone with extreme temperatures (dropping to -50°C from October to May). It is infamously known for its inhumane prison conditions and is situated in the same town where opposition leader Alexei Navalny was assassinated.
Azat has already been subjected to torture. According to a direct testimony dated April 21, 2026, Azat was subjected to atrocious physical and psychological abuses: forced stripping, binding, suffocation, repeated beatings, electrocution, and preliminary acts of rape. These acts of barbarism had the sole objective of breaking his will.
The support committee, already mobilized for Azat's immediate release, firmly condemns these criminal acts, which constitute a total violation of international law and conventions against torture. These methods demonstrate the current regime's determination to eliminate all dissent.
We demand an immediate end to the torture and the release of Azat Miftakhov. We call upon citizens, regardless of their nationality, to support and spread our appeal.
We urge governments, the European Union, the Council of Europe, and the United Nations to intervene for the release of Azat.
Azat Miftakhov's life is in immediate danger.
