Last year, a construction company announced that it had received a contract on the territory of the Kyiv National University of Theater, Cinema and Television, named I.K. Karpenko-Kary. The building land was transferred by the university, due to the creation of an artificial debt by the past management of the university.
On October 6, students launched a petition to overturn the Kyiv City Council's decision to cede this land. The petition was supported by the student union Direct Action. The decision was then challenged in court and on September 5 of this year, the court had to rule on its validity.The day before the trial where this operation was contested, the student union Priama Diia (Direct Action) declared: “We call on the students of Kyiv universities a
nd all those who care about them (universities, colleges, institutes) to come tomorrow, Tuesday September 5, at 4:30 p.m., at the following address: 5, Velyka St. 6, where the final hearing of the case will be held. » On the day of the hearing, September 5, around a hundred students, with signs and slogans, came to defend their right to quality education - and achieved their goal. The speculators' operation was foiled by the court. The union welcomed the court's decision: “This story proves once again that student action is important and that we are capable of overcoming the system we find ourselves in. Thank you to everyone who came to this action.”
