Indigenous people from the Guarani people, in Jaraguá, São Paulo, blocked the Bandeirantes - an important highway - on Tuesday, May 30, to draw the population's attention to the Marco Temporal, a measure that takes away the rights of native people.

Affiliated with CSP-Conlutas, the Luta Popular movement was present at the mobilization, joining the ranks of those who fight to defend their territories.

But do you know what Marco Temporal is?

There is a bill (PL 490) that wants to establish a Marco Temporal  - milestone - for the demarcation of indigenous lands.

This is a very serious proposal because it wants to transform into law a theory that inverts Brazil's history completely.

The defenders of this thesis are members of the agribusiness who wants to radically change the criteria for the demarcation of indigenous territories. They want to establish that only the lands already occupied by the indigenous peoples on October 5, 1988 - the exact date when the actual Brazilian Constitution was promulgated - could be claimed by them.

But this bill ignores the process of expulsion and violence experienced by the indigenous people!

For example, to a people who occupied a certain territory for centuries, but who were expelled in 1980, and moved in search of survival. Having retaken and reoccupied that land after October 5, 1988, the right over their traditional territory would not be recognized!

But, then, why do they want to approve this absurd thesis?

The ruralists, landowners and agribusinesses want to remove each and every one of the obstacles to the advance of their predatory economic interests.

What the supporters of the Marco Temporal want is to increase their profits and fatten their pockets with more money!

They want to destroy the rights of indigenous peoples over their territories, grabbing more land!
And all this also means advancing in nature´s destruction, increasing violence and genocide against the native peoples of this country and expanding the inhuman working conditions analogous to slavery that we have seen these large agribusiness companies do.

The struggle of indigenous, quilombola, and traditional people is one and international. The right to land, housing, and dignity. All support to the struggling indigenous peoples in Brazil.
