Lilya, crane operator, woman trade unionist in Lviv

On the eve of May 1st, Commons website offers a new video about Liliya Vasylieva, a crane operator and leader of the crane operators' union in the Lviv region. She joined the union in the early days of its creation. As a crane operator, Liliya works at heights of several dozen metres (150) and is responsible not only for the timely delivery of building materials, but also for the lives and health of other construction workers. Crane operators are relatively few in number, but they face many problems, such as employers' failure to comply with safety requirements on construction sites; the lack of qualified specialists and the poor quality of vocational training; no extra payment for dangerous working conditions, which often lead to occupational illnesses; the authorities completely ignoring workers' complaints and suggestions; obsolete equipment and the absence of regular inspections; low wages.
