The Network

Alerted by various channels, including the Syndicate of Workers of the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, a member of the International Labour Network of Solidarity and Struggle, we are disseminating information about the death sentence handed down to Sharifeh Mohammadi, a social activist and political prisoner.

The Islamic court in Rasht sentenced her to death for ‘waging war against the Islamic State.’ The judge claimed that her past membership in the committee for the formation of independent trade unions was proof of this alleged crime.

During the interrogation, Sharifeh Mohammadi was placed in solitary confinement, subjected to torture and severe pressure to force her to make false confessions; she was denied a phone call with her 12-year-old child, visits with her family, and access to a lawyer. Former prisoners who saw her testified that her body bore marks of beatings and torture.

Sharifeh Mohammadi was even denied the right to be physically present in court and defend herself in person.

Sharifeh's case exposes the intersection of patriarchy, class oppression, and authoritarian violence. A woman, a mother, and a worker is targeted because her life embodies resistance against domination.

The Tehran and Suburban Bus Company Workers' Union ‘expresses its strong solidarity with Sharifeh Mohammadi and her family, and once again emphasises that death sentences are nothing more than tools of repression and fearmongering in society’. The union demands ‘the total abolition of this inhumane punishment, under any pretext whatsoever, and the immediate suspension of the unjust death sentences handed down against Sharifeh Mohammadi, Verisheh Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi and other social activists.’
